PACE has contributed in five different ways: first in terms of fulfilling its original objectives, second, by making progress in the foundations of artificial cell science, third, by laying the groundwork for a soft evolvable real-world embedded and microscopic future Information Technology, fourth, by directly stimulating further endeavors that have their intellectual seeds in PACE and fifth by constructing a complete initial framework for socially and ethically responsible work in this potent new area. The sections below demonstrate that although PACE never signed up to deliver in its lifetime a fully functional artificial cell, it has achieved its diverse and complex objectives to bootstrap a new research area of Living Technology that will lay the groundwork for a new kind of IT for embedded system application that, sharing many of the features of living systems, will usher in a new age of IT that will benefit humanity through its close relation to the way our own information processing functions.
